N,N-Diallyl-5-methoxytryptamine, commonly known as 5-MeO-DALT or colloquially as Foxtrot, is a lesser-known psychedelic substance belonging to the tryptamine class. It is characterized by short-lived psychedelic effects when administered and is structurally related to other tryptamines such as 5-MeO-DiPT and DALT, although it is reported to produce distinct effects.
The synthesis of 5-MeO-DALT was first accomplished by Alexander Shulgin, who shared initial material regarding its synthesis and effects with a researcher in May 2004. This information was subsequently circulated online, leading to the compound's appearance on the online research chemical market. In August 2004, Erowid officially published the synthesis and effects of 5-MeO-DALT, with reports of its detection beginning to surface in 2007.
Anecdotal reports suggest that the effects of 5-MeO-DALT are primarily physical in nature, lacking the visual distortions or perceptual depth commonly associated with most psychedelics. Users have described its headspace as "shallow," yet suitable for sexual contexts due to its potent stimulating and libidinous effects.
The full chemical name of 5-MeO-DALT is N-allyl-N-[2-(5-methoxy-1H-indol-3-yl)ethyl] prop-2-en-1-amine. It is related to compounds such as 5-MeO-DPT and DALT (N,N-Diallyltryptamine). The name 5-MeO-DALT reflects its chemical structure, which includes two allyl groups bound to the amino group and a 5-methoxy group attached to the indole ring of tryptamine. At room temperature, 5-MeO-DALT appears as an off-white powder.
5-MeO-DALT binds to several receptors, including 5-HT1A, 5-HT1D, 5-HT1E, 5-HT2A, 5-HT2B, 5-HT2C, 5-HT6, α2A, α2B, α2C, H1, κ-opioid, σ1, and σ2, with Ki values lower than 10μM. Additionally, it acts as a monoamine reuptake inhibitor for dopamine transporters (DAT) and serotonin transporters (SERT). As a partial agonist at the 5-HT2A receptor, the psychedelic effects of 5-MeO-DALT are believed to arise from its efficacy at these receptors. However, the precise role of these interactions and their contribution to the psychedelic experience remains an area of ongoing scientific investigation.
5-MeO-DALT has also been utilized as an intermediate in the preparation of radiolabeled diethyltryptamine, highlighting its relevance in scientific research.
