AMT Succinate Powder

αMT, or α-Methyltryptamine, is a synthetic indole alkaloid that belongs to the tryptamine class. This compound was initially developed by Upjohn in the 1960s and was briefly utilized in the Soviet Union as an antidepressant under the trade name Indopan.

Historical Context

Indopan was prescribed in doses ranging from 5 to 10 mg, which is considerably lower than the amounts typically used for recreational purposes. This historical usage highlights the compound's potential therapeutic applications, despite its more common association with recreational use today.

Chemical Structure

αMT features a core structure that is characteristic of tryptamines, consisting of a bicyclic indole heterocycle. This structure is attached at the R3 position to an amino group via an ethyl side chain. Notably, αMT is distinguished by a methyl group substitution at the alpha carbon (Rα) of its tryptamine backbone.

Enantiomers and Forms

In its freebase form, αMT exists as a racemate, containing both its (R-) and (S-) enantiomers. This racemic nature can influence its pharmacological effects and interactions within the body.

Pharmacological Effects

αMT functions as a balanced reuptake inhibitor and releasing agent for three primary monoamines: serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Additionally, it acts as a non-selective serotonin receptor agonist, which contributes to its psychoactive properties.

Psychedelic Properties

The psychedelic effects of αMT are primarily attributed to its role as a partial agonist at the 5-HT2A receptor. This interaction is crucial for the compound's ability to induce altered states of consciousness and other psychedelic experiences.

Additional Mechanisms

Beyond its psychedelic effects, αMT also serves as a releasing agent for serotonin, noradrenaline, and dopamine. Furthermore, it exhibits very weak, non-selective reversible inhibition of monoamine oxidase (RIMA) both in vitro and in vivo. However, this RIMA activity is unlikely to be significant at typical dosages.
