βk-2C-B (also known as Bk-2C-B or beta-keto 2C-B) is a novel psychedelic substance belonging to the phenethylamine class. It is structurally related to 2C-B.
The subjective effects of βk-2C-B include open and closed-eye visuals, time distortion, euphoria, and ego loss. Users often report that its effects are considerably more stimulating and less psychedelic compared to 2C-B, with a significantly longer duration.
The original synthesis of βk-2C-B is not documented in public records. However, insights from internet forums and scientific studies suggest that it was not synthesized in the 1970s by Alexander Shulgin, as was the case with many other 2C-x compounds. The first reliable mention of βk-2C-B dates back to 2004, where it was referenced in a scientific study as a precursor to 5-HT2A serotonin receptor agonists. The next confirmed mention occurred in December 2007, when a user named "King Kong" initiated a discussion thread on the bluelight.org forum regarding bk-2c-b. This thread saw limited engagement, with only about 20 posts over the next six years. Interest in βk-2C-B surged in 2013, coinciding with its availability on the research chemical market, where it was marketed as a legal alternative to 2C-B. Despite this, βk-2C-B remains relatively obscure, even among research chemicals. An analysis of Google search trends from 2013 to 2017 indicated that 2C-B was searched 3-4 times more frequently than βk-2C-B. Since 2017, βk-2C-B has largely vanished from the open market.
βk-2C-B, or beta-keto 2C-B, is a substituted phenethylamine characterized by a phenyl ring connected to an amino (NH2) group via an ethyl chain. It features a ketone group at the beta carbon of the structure (R1), along with methoxy functional groups (CH3O-) attached to carbons R2 and R5, and a bromine atom at carbon R4 of the phenyl ring. βk-2C-B is part of the 2C family of phenethylamines, which are defined by the presence of methoxy groups at the 2 and 5 positions of the benzene ring.
βk-2C-B is believed to function as a 5-HT2A partial agonist. The psychedelic effects associated with this compound are thought to arise from its activity at the 5-HT2A receptors. However, the precise mechanisms by which these interactions lead to the psychedelic experience remain poorly understood.
