5-MeO-MiPT is a psychedelic and hallucinogen belonging to the tryptamine family. It is utilized by some individuals as an entheogen and shares structural and pharmacodynamic properties with other substances such as 5-MeO-DiPT, DiPT, and MiPT. Due to its similar structure and effects, it is often used as a substitute for 5-MeO-DiPT.
This compound acts as a non-selective serotonin receptor agonist, including activity at the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor. 5-MeO-MiPT is classified as a tryptamine and is specifically the N-methyl-N-isopropyl homologue of the psychedelic 5-MeO-DMT. Its full chemical name is 5-methoxy-N-methyl-N-isopropyltryptamine.
5-MeO-MiPT causes the ehrlich reagent to turn purple before fading to a faint blue, while the marquis reagent changes from yellow to black upon contact.
This substance is an analogue of the more widely known drug 5-MeO-DiPT, often referred to as "foxy methoxy," and is nicknamed "moxy." Users have reported experiencing tactile effects similar to those of 5-MeO-DiPT, but with fewer unwanted side effects. At higher doses, 5-MeO-MiPT can become significantly more psychedelic, sometimes being compared to 5-MeO-DMT. At doses ranging from 4 to 10 milligrams, users typically find 5-MeO-MiPT to be a euphoric and tactile substance. Its energetic effects can be pronounced at higher doses, leading to a considerable increase in heart rate and amplified auditory perception, which may result in synesthetic experiences, such as "touching or tasting sounds."
The hallucinogenic and entheogenic effects of 5-MeO-MiPT are primarily attributed to serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonism. However, additional mechanisms, such as the inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO), may also play a role. Beyond the 5-HT2A receptor, 5-MeO-MiPT has shown potent binding and activation of other serotonin receptors, including 5-HT1A, 5-HT2B, and 5-HT2C.
5-MeO-MiPT exhibits significant affinity for the serotonin transporter (SERT) and norepinephrine transporter (NET), functioning as a moderately potent serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). These mechanisms may help explain anecdotal reports of antidepressant and anxiolytic effects at modest doses. For instance, SNRIs like venlafaxine are commonly prescribed for depression, while the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor agonist buspirone is primarily used for anxiety treatment. However, subsequent research has contradicted earlier findings, indicating that 5-MeO-MiPT does not significantly bind to or inhibit human monoamine transporters.
