N-Ethyl-nor-pentedrone, also known as N-Ethylpentedrone, Ethyl-pentedrone, or more commonly NEP, is a lesser-known stimulant substance of the cathinone class. It produces stimulating, euphoric, and mildly entactogenic effects when administered. The stimulating effects of NEP are primarily attributed to its activity as a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI). The reported entactogenic effects may also be due to its activity as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor or releasing agent at moderate to high doses, although recent research indicates very low serotonin reuptake inhibition. NEP likely acts as an unselective serotonin-norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (SNDRI).

Structurally, NEP is closely related to its parent compound pentedrone, differing by the addition of an ethyl group on the terminal nitrogen of the carbon chain, which reportedly makes it about three times as potent as pentedrone. NEP is also related to N-Ethylhexedrone (commonly known as Hexen) and has been reported to produce largely similar effects.

Effects and User Experience

Users report that NEP is a novel entactogenic stimulant drug with effects similar to pentedrone. However, NEP is described as more functional, enhancing social interaction, productivity, and physical engagement, with recreational effects lasting about two to three times longer (approximately 120 minutes). While pentedrone may cause a "flooring" effect, NEP keeps users more active and engaged without extreme fixation or distraction. The euphoria is often compared to cocaine and is described as slightly stronger than methamphetamine, with a natural feel to the stimulation that does not make users feel overtly under the influence.
